What if it’s too difficult to get through the rough patches?

Lane:

Being a nurse is Lane’s life, that is until Mike pushes him up against that damn door and kisses him like nobody’s business.

Now he’s left wondering how he can live without Mike at his side. But beneath the sweet, calm exterior Mike portrays to the world is something dark and dangerous. Will Lane be able to deal with the monster within, or will it consume both of them?

Mike:

He can’t unsee the damage that bomb wrought or bring back his friend, but he can find solace in Lane’s arms…or he thinks he can.

One night together is too much, and his memories overwhelm him, opening him up to the trauma he witnessed. Memories are hard to conquer because they don’t have to fight back, they just twist their way deep into the mind, making life too hard to tolerate.

Can Lane save him, or will he push them both too far when the past threatens to overwhelm them?

Chapter One

Emptiness filled Lane as he watched the blue ocean appear then disappear as condos and other buildings slipped by. Mike made a left, heading away from the slice of heaven they’d all enjoyed for the last few days. Maybe it was just the trip ending, but he thought it was more.

He watched Mike, noticing the stubble on his jaw and how it covered his chin and went down his neck. They stopped for a light, and Mike glanced at him, his lips curved up in a smile that made Lane’s stomach twist. Why it made him feel funny, he had no clue.

“So what do you really think about Thomas and Clay?”

Mike’s question threw him. “What am I supposed to say?”

Mike shrugged then went back to looking at the road as the light changed to green. “I don’t know; tell me what you really think.”

He stared out the front windshield for a moment, wondering how to answer the question. “Well, I like Clay. I guess I just…”

Another light stopped them, and Mike turned to look at him with his brows raised. “Are you jealous?”

“What?” Lane couldn’t believe Mike had asked him if he was jealous. “Why would I be jealous?”

“Just, you know, you thought you would get with Thomas if he was going to get with anyone?”

Lane shook his head. “No. Not at all. I’m not jealous. It’s not like that.”

“Talk. We don’t have long before we get to the airport.”

The light changed again, and Mike took off. Lane turned to stare out the window, unsure how to voice what he felt. “I don’t like being alone.”

“Then get out there and date someone.”

He shook his head and turned to stare at Mike. The scene out the window wasn’t as interesting since they’d turned down a street away from the water. He missed the water, but what he missed more was the guys and being with them. “I can’t find anyone.”

Mike chuckled. “Tell me about it. I’m surrounded by sexy women while I’m at work, but I can’t connect with them.”

Depression made his head ache. Or maybe he was depressed, because in addition to having no clue what to do, his head hurt. What if he never figured life out? He would be one of those old men at the bars looking to pick up young women who had no interest in a rotten old fart. He shivered at the mental image.

Mike’s words interrupted his thoughts. “I’ll be in New York next week.”

“You should stop by.” The words were out before he even could think what that would mean. He worked nights and slept during the day.

Mike was silent for a while, and they were close to the airport before he spoke again. “If I came up on Tuesday, could I stay at your place?”

His earlier trepidation was gone. Screw sleeping, he’d have Mike with him. He nodded, excitement filling him. “I’d like that. I have to work on Tuesday night, but I’m off on Wednesday and Thursday nights.”

Mike shot him a sweet grin. He pushed the tingly feelings away and rolled his eyes when Mike looked away.

“Works for me. I’m working a little on Thursday and most of the afternoon and night on Friday. I’ll stay until Sunday.”

“Awesome. It’ll be good seeing you again.” He meant it too. He could sleep after Mike went home.

They pulled into the parking lot for the rental return, and his chest squeezed. If he thought he’d been melancholy before, this was way worse. He didn’t want to head home. He’d been alive when he was with the guys. The vacation had been great, but it reminded him of how much he missed his brothers—and they were his brothers. Seeing Mike next week would be good. Heck, he wished they lived closer. He wanted to see everyone more often, but for now, Skype would have to do.

They got their bags out of the trunk and headed into the terminal after they handed over the keys to the car. Heat was building, and he was happy to be heading back to cooler temperatures. At least he told himself he was happy to leave. Actually, he wanted them all to stay here and live together. Maybe not together, but dammit, they should be closer to each other.

Once inside, they headed upstairs to security. They both passed through without any issues. Mike’s flight was leaving soon, so he had to go. Mike pulled him into a hug and Lane held on, not wanting to let Mike leave. It had been an amazing vacation and he didn’t want it to end.
“Hey, I’ll see you on Tuesday. I’ll call when I’m close.” He squeezed Lane again then backed away.

“Sure, have a safe trip home.” He hated saying those words. Their home should be together.

“You bet.”

Mike gave a quick wave and was gone. Lane felt like his heart had been torn out. He missed Thomas and Clay, and Brent and Jake, but he missed Mike most of all.

3.5 Stars

This is book 3 in the Only You series. While it can technically be read as a standalone (which is what I did), the couples featured in the first two books appear in Getting Through, so it might be best to read them in order.

I loved the PTSD storyline. I thought it was well executed and researched. I particularly liked that the author didn't magically cure Mike after the first therapy session, but showed that it was a progression and that some persons need a more extensive and in-depth treatment than others.

I liked Mike and Lane, both individually and as a couple. I liked that Lane was willing to be there for Mike and support him in every way he could. While their relationship was a bit instalove, well, it was nice that the fact that they had been 'straight' until the moment when Lane turned into a jealous bunny thinking Mike might have been out having sex with someone and then having Mike come and kiss him silly, was a bit of a non-issue. Neither of them cared much about labels or reasons why they were attracted to the other, they just were. They were good together, even if at first it was more than a bit awkward.

I really liked Thomas and Clay and Brent and Jake, they were great friends to Lane and Mike.

Overall, while there were some parts of the book that were a bit unrealistic, it was an enjoyable read. Recommendable!

Mason arrived back at Tessler's building just after eight o'clock that night. He'd put in a few hours of office work at Ventura Security, then home to shower and change for his date with Tessler. Now he was sitting outside in the backseat of the car service sending Tessler a quick text message.

“I'm here,” Mason typed.

“Okay, I'll meet you out in front of the coffee shop.”

Mason eased from the backseat and thanked the driver before he shut the door. When he turned around Tessler was standing there with a huge smile on his perfectly tanned face. It made him remember how tanned Tessler said he was all over his body. No tan lines. He hadn't been able to get that visual out of his head since Tessler had uttered the words. And his cock was in total agreement–the image of Tessler's fully tanned body was definitely boner-worthy.

“You're just in time to see the sun set behind the hillside,” Tessler said. He held out his hand for Mason to take it, then started to tug him toward the entrance of the building.

They stepped inside and Mason was acutely aware that this was the exact spot where he'd kissed Tessler for the first time. That thought had barely registered in his head when Tessler had him pushed up against the brick wall and his lips slammed down on his. Swift and needy, Tessler took immediate control of their kiss with his tongue licking the crease of Mason's lips before sliding inside. Teeth clinked together while their tongues wrestled and they devoured each others' mouths. It was a decadent feast that had Mason's entire body on fire.

His cock ached for attention, but he couldn't bring himself to pull out of the kiss to even suggest they move upstairs. The slippery wet haven of Tessler's mouth already had Mason's nerves on overload. Suggesting more physical contact between them might possibly cause Mason to come in his pants, and did he really want to spend the rest of the night trying to hide the wet spot? This kiss was heaven and hell because it wasn't near enough to quench his need for the man pressed against him, but damn it felt so fucking good. It was Tessler who finally pulled out of their lip lock. His heavy pants of breath further heated Mason's already flushed face.

“I had to see if our second kiss would be as good as the first,” Tessler admitted in a hoarse voice.

“And was it?” Mason asked.

Tessler chuckled and said, “It was even hotter.”

“I'd have to agree with that assessment, but we should probably do a little more . . . research to fully prove the data,” Mason said and grinned as wickedly as he could.

“Mmmm, then let's go,” Tessler said. He took Mason's hand and started to tug him down the hall toward the elevator.

Mason followed close behind Tessler with so many different emotions flooding his veins. He wondered where the night would take them, and if there'd be a second date. There had to be another date, right? With the kind of chemistry they shared, Tessler would have to want to see him again. There was no way in hell this was one sided or that he was imagining the attraction. Tessler was just as turned on as Mason was and he'd felt the evidence of that pressed into his hip just a minute ago by the doorway.

Release Day Review: Lesson Learned by Lillian Francis

Blurb:

Drew Jackson is sick of constantly being on the move, running away from his mistakes, his desires, and a secret-filled past. He's decided his new teaching job in Cardiff is his chance to finally settle down. Perhaps here he can have a home, and even friendships that won't end in disaster. Like his growing rapport with history teacher Nathan Morgan.

Nathan has been careful to keep his sexuality a secret at work. He doesn't want that kind of attention from the student body. There's one body he would like attention from, though—the new science teacher, Drew. But it's much too risky to let Drew know how he feels. He won't gamble their fledgling friendship on an awkward confession of lust. And Drew's probably straight anyway.

Their friendship is derailed when a student's accusation forces a reluctant confession. Drew is tempted to run again until he comes face to face with the inescapable realisation that flight has ruined every relationship he's ever had.

But maybe he's finally found someone worth staying in one place for.

Synopsis

Talented studio musician, Henry Cole, is offered the dream job of touring with popular rock band, the Vulgar Details. Things aren’t all rosy, though, as he is hired to replace Dell Miller, creative force behind the band, who recently flamed-out in a car accident.

Henry is all too aware that he’s no replacement for someone like Dell. He’s not the only one who feels that way, either. Terry Blackwood, band front man, has been giving him a hard time even before the tour start. He seems to resent Henry’s presence beyond all reason. What Henry doesn’t know is that Terry and Dell’s relationship was both intensely close and fraught with conflict.

Terry’s grief over Dell’s death is overwhelming and threatens to destroy not only the band but his life. It doesn’t help that the new member of the band makes him feel things he doesn’t want to. Worse, when he sings, Henry sounds just like the man Terry cared so deeply for.

With so much at stake, everything could come crashing down around them and mean the end for the Vulgar Details. Or, just maybe, Henry and Terry will find the one thing they need most.

Sometimes redemption comes from the last place you expect to find it.

It’s no surprise to either of them, then, that sparks fly when Vince’s coworker Lee enters the picture. Outwardly, Lee is tough and confident, but when a bad back confines him to Pete and Vince’s spare room, the cracks start to show and his desire for connection begins to peek through.
